Private equity / Portfolio CFO
The portfolio company CFO search.
The most common hire a sponsor makes, and the one that most often decides whether the plan works.
A portfolio CFO search finds a finance leader who can run sponsor reporting, manage lender covenants, deliver the value creation plan and prepare the company for exit. Steward Well runs these searches for PE-backed companies from $50M to $500M, partner-led, with a shortlist in 21 days.
What does a private equity portfolio CFO actually own?
- Monthly reporting to the sponsor, on time and the same way every month
- Lender reporting and covenant compliance on the debt that funded the deal
- The cash forecast, usually 13 weeks out and updated weekly
- The finance pieces of the value creation plan, like pricing, cost and working capital
- Add-on acquisitions, from diligence to integration
- Exit readiness: clean numbers, a quality of earnings review and a data room

Why do so many founder CFOs struggle after a deal?
Many founder-era finance leaders are excellent. They know the business cold. But sponsor ownership changes the job overnight.
Reports that went out on day 20 now need to go out on day 10. Debt brings covenants that someone has to watch every month. The board wants a forecast it can trust, not a best guess.
Some leaders grow into that. Others don't want to. A good search starts by deciding which is true, kindly and early.
What should a sponsor look for in a portfolio CFO?
- Prior time inside a sponsor-backed company, ideally through a full hold
- A record of building the reporting, not just reading it
- Comfort with debt, lenders and covenant math
- A plan for the first 100 days they can explain in plain words
- Evidence that they hire well, since most will rebuild part of the team
What does a portfolio CFO earn?
Base and bonus track company size. A 2025 survey of 312 CFOs found the most common base was $250K to $299K at $50M to $99M in revenue, and $350K to $399K from $100M to $499M. Portfolio CFOs also usually get equity, often through a management incentive plan. Equity terms vary by sponsor, so we help you set them early.
How does a Steward Well search run?
- Discovery. A partner meets the owner, the board or sponsor, and the team the leader will inherit.
- A written success profile. What this person must have done by month twelve, agreed before we call anyone.
- An original market map. Built for your seat, not pulled from a stack of resumes.
- A calibrated shortlist in 21 days. Qualified, interested and assessed against the profile.
- Scored interviews, deep references and offer support. The search closes in 45 to 90 days.
- Twelve months of check-ins, backed by a written 12-month guarantee.

Questions buyers ask first
When should a sponsor replace the founder-era CFO?
Not by default. Assess the CFO against the plan in the first 100 days. If the gap is skills the person can learn, coach. If the gap is the job itself, start the search while the plan still has time.
Do portfolio CFOs need prior private equity experience?
It helps a lot. Someone who has lived through sponsor reporting and an exit makes fewer first-year mistakes. We still consider strong candidates without it, and we test for the gaps.
How long does a portfolio CFO search take?
We commit in writing to a calibrated shortlist in 21 days and a finished search in 45 to 90 days.
Can the search stay confidential from the current CFO?
Yes. We agree the outreach story with the deal team before any calls, and we share only what each candidate needs.
